The Florida Department of Children and Families is hosting a training of interest to volunteer guardians ad litem.
Join them on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM for Youth Mental Health First Aid Training.
Many of the most common mental health disorders begin during adolescence. The importance of identifying and addressing mental health issues during this period of life cannot be overstated. Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a program that teaches family members, friends, social service and agency staff, school personnel and neighbors how to recognize and help a youth who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis.
This community-focused training, presented by certified instructor Missy Lee, provides information on the Mental Health First Aid approach. Participants will learn to
identify the signs and symptoms of mental health disorders and crises in youth, as well as risk factors and protective factors for this population;
apply the five-step Mental Health First Aid action plan to youth mental health disorders and crisis situations through the use of discussions, case examples and videos; and
use the plan's approach skills, effective communication techniques and guidance on connecting youth and families to professional and community resources.
In addition, this course is designed to increase mental health literacy, decrease stigmatizing attitudes in our communities and increase appropriate and early help-seeking by people with mental health problems.
Participants may receive eight (8) hours of continuing education credit. Afterward, report your hours quickly and easily using our eForm.
The training is free. You can download the event flyer and register with the event contact below.
