Children's Week 2014

April 6-11, 2014

Florida's Children's Week is an annual celebration of children and child advocate volunteers that promotes the health, safety and well-being of children and families.

Through community events and activities statewide, Children's Week brings together thousands of parents, children, policymakers, professionals, community leaders and concerned citizens to share valuable knowledge about children's issues in each community.

In addition to the community activities scheduled statewide, several main events such as the "Hanging of the Hands" and the Lawton and Rhea Chiles Advocacy Award banquet are scheduled in Tallahassee. Schedule highlights and links to additional information are presented below.

Supported by 109 different non-profit, corporate, philanthropic, faith-based and governmental organizations, Children's Week unites those wishing to deliver a message that every child in Florida must be healthy, ready to learn and able to achieve their full potential. The Florida Guardian ad Litem Program is supporting Children's Week as a Premier Partner this year.

Children's Day was first made a legal holiday in 1983 after a campaign spearheaded by the Florida Children's Forum. Starting in 1996, the State Coordinating Council for Early Childhood Services joined with the Children's Forum to organize and coordinate statewide activities for the holiday.

Once the council was legislatively dissolved, a Children's Week committee was formed in its place. Officially renamed to Parents and Children's Day in 2002, Children's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in April pursuant to § 683.17, Florida Statutes (2013).

Most events are free. You can download the event flyer, browse local activities, register for events and submit questions to event contact below.
