From Group Care to Family Life

Thursday, October 15, 2015

The Florida Quality Parenting Initiative and Florida's Center for Child Welfare are hosting a continuing education webinar of interest to volunteer guardians ad litem and staff.

Join them on Thursday, October 15, 2015 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM for From Group Care to Family Life.

From her thirty years of knowledge and experience working with foster children, Dr. Heineman will share her insight into the two worlds foster children who are transitioning from a group home setting into a family home must reconcile: one where consequences are generally governed by rules and privileges and the other where "it's all about relationships," as Dr. Heineman often says.

During this webinar, Dr. Heineman will give an overview of how trauma affects a child's development; behavior; ability to negotiate rules and expectations; and build relationships. She will also provide guidance on how to navigate a number of key phases in the successful transition from group care to a new foster family, including how to help youth understand a family's unique culture and unspoken agreements; how to set consistent expectations; how to manage the inevitable limit-testing; and how to reassure youth who have been bounced from placement to placement that "this time it's real."

The webinar will be presented by Dr. Toni Heineman, Founder and Director of A Home Within. Dr. Heineman will also participate in a question and answer session with participants following her presentation.

Participants may receive one-and-a-half (1.5) hours of continuing education credit. Afterward, report your hours quickly and easily using our eForm.

The training is free. You can download a print flyer and register online to participate.
