New Events, Fundraiser Results and A Volunteer In Print

New Events

We regularly host, sponsor and support a variety of events that provide community outreach, increase awareness of our program, help recruit new volunteers, raise funds and furnish training to our volunteer guardians ad litem. The following events were added to our calendar.

Fundraiser Results

On Wednesday, January 20, 2016, Moe's Southwest Grill hosted a special fundraiser in support of Child Advocates II, Inc. (CAII) and the Second Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program.

During the Moe's Southwest Grill Grand Opening Fundraiser at their new Walker Plaza location at 3020 West Pensacola Street, visitors purchased an entrée, side and drink for $5.00 with one-hundred percent of proceeds donated to CAII.

The event was very successful with a total of $1,001.85 donated!

Thank you to Rob Atkisson and Moe's Tallahassee for their continued support of our program.

A Volunteer In Print

While browsing the Friday, January 29, 2016 edition of the Tallahassee Democrat, this author came across an article featuring one of our volunteers. Those familiar with our program all certainly know or have heard of Dorothy "Dot" Binger, an award-winning volunteer with a heart of gold.

In the article "Archived photos tell the story of Tallahassee Community College" by Byron Dobson, Binger's history with TCC is discussed. She was "the third employee hired by the college in 1966" and went on to work there for twenty-five years.

The article also features a photograph of Binger with her daughter Norma Parrish and information about the college's fiftieth anniversary celebration.

In Print: Tallahassee Magazine

The Second Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program is featured in the current January/February 2016 issue of Tallahassee Magazine.

Our program and Circuit Director Deborah Moore are referenced and quoted in the article "Guide and Provide" by Rochelle Koff on pages fifty-nine through sixty-three in the "Life: Here To Help" section. Moreover, the lede photograph for the article, featuring Moore and her youth mentee Brian Williams, is adapted from one of our photos. We are also included among other local youth organizations in the "Youth Services and Support" addendum on page sixty-four of the publication.

A digital version of the magazine is available to read online. The article is also available in plain text under the alternate title "Helping Teens Transition from Foster Care to Adulthood".

Thank you to Tallahassee Magazine for sharing our program with their readers.

Event Update: CAII Cupcakes and Cookies for Kids

Two companies have joined as event sponsors for this year's CAII Cupcakes and Cookies for Kids.

Trak Engineering, Inc. is participating as a gold sponsor and Tallahassee State Bank as a bronze sponsor. These two companies have supported this fun and tasty event for three years in a row.

With proceeds benefiting the Second Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program, CAII Cupcakes and Cookies for Kids is a friendly annual competition for amateur and professional bakers and an opportunity for the public to raise money for our program by sampling the delicious results.

This year's competition is on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the Florida Department of Transportation W. Haydon Burns Building Auditorium across from Cascades Park in Downtown Tallahassee.

Visit gal2.org/cupcake for complete details and to purchase tasting cards, enter the competition or register as a sponsor.

Coming Soon

Finally, we are pleased to announce that work is underway to launch a new online volunteer application. We hope that by digitizing most of the form, it will be quicker and easier for prospective volunteers to begin the application process.

When the new Volunteer Application eForm is launched, we will also publish revisions to the Prospective Volunteers page to clarify the application process timeline. New supplemental downloads will also be added since not all of the application process may be done online.

Complete details will be published here once these new features are finished. We hope to have them ready by the end of the month, so stay tuned.
